Apparently we’re in the ‘Age of Visual Culture’ and I can well believe it. If my own social media accounts have taught me anything, it’s that people love a pretty picture, and why wouldn’t they? I take so much pleasure in arranging and styling my room sets, they inspire me just as much as the final pictures inspire others.
“10% of photos taken by mankind took place in the last 12 months”
It’s staggering. But it just goes to show how much the idea of this ‘visual culture’ is true. People document just about everything and then instagram it, share it, pin it and like it. Personally, I love that this is the ‘age’ we’re living in; in case you couldn’t tell, I’m a photography fan!
Last month I snuck off to the Winter Decorative Fair in Battersea Park and I snapped a few pictures of my own. Because when searching for inspiration, whether it’s at an antique fair or a French market, it’s not enough to just see anymore; we want to keep and treasure those things that inspire us.
My designs tend to stem from gorgeous antique pieces I come across, that simply need to be shared again. So I take the original as my inspiration and I make it my own. I suppose it’s my own way of treasuring these scraps of history.
Inspiration is a funny thing and it tends to come when you least expect it, but for my part, I enjoy searching it out. The Decorative Fair is the perfect place to be inspired, it’s a family-owned event that was the first to unite my two passions: antiques and interior design. Their Spring fair, the second of the three they hold throughout the year, runs from the 19th to the 24th of April and tickets are complimentary!
Whether you’re looking for inspiration, or just want to browse the gorgeous antiques, I couldn’t recommend it more.
In the true spirit of this ‘visual’ age, I thought I’d share some of my favourite finds from the January fair; a lot of wonderful oriental influences this year.
Do you have a place that you frequent when you’re in need of inspiration? Let me know your favourites through any of my social channels, maybe we can inspire each other!
